Policy Advocacy: Promote Responsible Business Practices in Viet Nam

On 31st October in Ho Chi Minh City and 3rd November 2023 in Hanoi, the Policy Conference “DEVELOPMENT & IMPLEMENTATION OF POLICIES FOR PROMOTION OF “RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS PRACTICES”: Experience in EU, Thailand & Practice in Viet Nam – Participation of Businesses and civil society organisations” took place with the attendance of over 200 delegates from various companies, civil society organisations (CSOs), government agencies, media, and other relevant stakeholders.

The Conferences in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi featured presentations by representatives of the European Union Delegation to Vietnam and leading experts in the field of responsible business practices:

    1. Dr. Lothar Rieth (Head of Sustainability at EnBW Group, Vice Chairman of the Pro NGO! e.V., Germany) & Ms. Chau Bui (Project Manager, Ph.D. Candidate in Business & Human Rights at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg University, Germany) delivered a presentation on “Lessons from the EU & Germany on the journey to promote RBP (including the goal of Carbon Reduction in relevant regulations).”
    2. Mr. Huan Nguyen (Business and Human Rights Specialist, UNDP Vietnam) presented on “UNDP Vietnam promoting Responsible Business Practices with the Participation of Businesses & CSOs.”
    3. Mr. Anh Vu (Associate, ASL Law) delivered a presentation on “Challenges for Vietnamese Businesses under Decision 843/QD-TTg on Responsible Business Practices.”
    4. Ms. Tarinee Suravoranon (Project Manager Business and Human Rights, UNDP Thailand) presented on “Thailand’s Experiences in Implementing the National Action Plan on Business & Human Rights.”At the two Conferences, there were also introductions to businesses and CSOs with exemplary practices in the field of responsible business:

      3. TH Group – Ms. Hoàng Thị Thanh Thủy (Director of Sustainable Development)
      4. Oxalis Group – Mr. Nguyễn Duy Thịnh (Deputy Marketing Director)
      5. GC Food – Mr. Vũ Xuân Hạnh (Marketing Director)
      6. DiBee – Mr. Thomas Beurthey (Founder & CEO)
      7. AHK Vietnam – Ms. Lành Huyền Như (Project Coordinator)
      8. Vietnam Environmental Business Association – Ms. Nguyễn Thuỳ Anh (Senior Communications Officer at IUCN Vietnam, Representative of the Secretariat of VB4E)
      9. DRD Center – Mr. Nguyễn Văn Cử (Deputy Director of the Center)

      Ms. Chau Bui (Project Manager, doctoral researcher in Business & Human Rights at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg University, Germany) and Mr. Minh Tran (RED Director) jointly facilitated in-depth discussions on policy recommendations at both seminars.

      In the two policy consultation sessions promoting responsible business practices, a wide range of contributions and opinions were acknowledged from diverse stakeholders, including businesses, CSOs, researchers, and interested individuals. Subsequently, the draft of policy recommendations was publicly solicited for extensive feedback, and later refined into a comprehensive proposal, which was then forwarded to relevant public authorities and governmental agencies.

       

      The Win-Win for Vietnam project is jointly implemented from September 2020 – March 2024, by the Institute for Research on Development Communication (RED) – lead organisation (Vietnam) and Pro NGO! e.V. (Germany), and co-funded by the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam.
